Basic functions and types of screw barrels

Feb 20, 2025

The screw barrel plays a vital role in plastic processing machinery. It works together with the screw to complete the melting, mixing and conveying process of plastics.

Basic functions of screw barrels
Heating and melting: The screw barrel is usually equipped with a heating device inside, which can heat the added plastic particles to a molten state.
Conveying: Through the rotation of the screw, the molten plastic is continuously pushed forward and finally enters the mold for molding.
Mixing and homogenization: During the melting and conveying process, the thread design inside the screw barrel helps to evenly mix the plastic and ensure the consistent quality of the product.
Pressure control: The screw barrel can also help to establish and maintain the necessary pressure, which is crucial for obtaining high-quality plastic products.

Types of screw barrels:
1. Single screw barrel
The single screw barrel is the most common type and is suitable for the processing of most general plastics. It has a simple design and low cost, and is suitable for a variety of standard injection molding and extrusion equipment.

2. Twin screw barrel
The twin screw barrel contains two relatively rotating screws. This design provides better mixing effect and higher production efficiency. Twin screw barrels are particularly suitable for high-performance plastic materials that require high shear and good mixing.

3. Parallel twin screw barrels
The two screws of the parallel twin screw barrel are arranged in parallel. This design is conducive to uniform mixing and efficient conveying of materials. It is often used in processes such as blending modification and reactive extrusion.

4. Conical twin screw barrels
The screw diameter of the conical twin screw barrel gradually decreases from the feed end to the discharge end. This design helps to improve the conveying efficiency and melting quality of the material and is suitable for the processing of high-viscosity materials.

5. Specially designed screw barrels
In addition to the above basic types, there are some specially designed screw barrels, such as planetary screw barrels, which are optimized for specific application requirements, such as increasing shear rate and improving heat transfer performance.

Screw barrels play a vital role in plastic processing. There are various types of screw barrels that can meet the needs of different materials and processes. Choosing the right screw barrel is crucial to ensure the quality and production efficiency of plastic products.
