Difference between twin screw barrel and single screw

Jul 03, 2024

In the classification of air compressors, there are generally piston type, screw type, centrifugal type, vortex type, etc. In screw air compressors, they are divided into single screw compressors and double screw compressors. Different types of air compressors have different characteristics and specific applications.

Force balance level:
Single screw: The axial and radial gas forces borne by the screw can be automatically balanced. The bearing capacity of star gear teeth requires them to have sufficient compressive strength and bending stiffness.

Twin screw: The rotor of the screw motor bears significant axial and radial gas forces, and the screw should have sufficient compressive strength and bending stiffness.

Manufacturing cost level:
Single screw: Generally, screw and star wheel bearings can be used for rolling bearings, with low manufacturing costs;
Twin screw: Due to the large size of the two screw rotors, high-precision rolling bearings are required, resulting in higher manufacturing costs.

Stability:
Single screw: The star gear teeth of a single screw air compressor are vulnerable parts. In addition to high requirements for the raw materials of the star gear teeth, they also need to be replaced regularly;

Twin screw: The twin screw air compressor has no parts, fewer faults, and can operate for a long time.

Noise and vibration levels:
The noise and vibration of single screw and double screw air compressors are basically the same.

Efficiency comparison:
In the case of new machines, the efficiency of single screw compressors and double screw compressors is basically the same. But as the operating time changes, the wear of the planetary teeth of the single screw compressor will reduce efficiency and gas supply.

practical:
Single screw: suitable for high exhaust working pressure places such as high-pressure air compressors, refrigeration compressor units, natural gas compressors, etc;

Twin screw: Due to the bending stiffness of the motor rotor and the adhesion of the rolling bearings, twin screw compressors can only be used in the medium and low pressure range.
